We have all, at some point or another, felt we have placed our foot in our mouth. Being socially aware of what we say in a constant challenge that we must be aware of and try to avoid. Below are some of the common phrases used and why you might want to avoid them.

  • "You look tired": Most people say this because they are trying to be helpful, it just may have the opposite effect. Tired people are not appealing – they have droopy eyes, messy hair, trouble concentrating and possibly grouchy, so saying you look tired implies all these items. Consider "Is everything OK?"
  • "You always..." or "You never..." These phrases immediately raise people's defensive and close off your message, which is not what you probably intended to do. Consider "It seems like you do this often."
  • "As I said before..." This phrase can be insulting. It implies you don't think the person heard you or you may be showing signs of insecurity. Consider saying again, in a different or more clear manner, what you said earlier.
  • "Good luck" There are better ways to say this. It implies a person needs luck to succeed. Consider "I know you have what it takes."
  • "It's up to you." or "Whatever" If you were asked a question the person is asking your opinion. Consider "I don't have a strong opinion either way, but a couple of things to consider are..."
  • There are many other phrases also that can be used in a manner that is not flattering, so just be conscious of what and how you say things.
